Virginia Opera

The Virginia Opera 2023/2024 season has it all: rings of fire, madcap comedy, vital history, and, of course, tragedy. And yet, at the heart of this spectacles are very human experiences. They are heroes, lovers, dreamers, and believers.

Virginia Opera: Siegfried

SiegfriedOctober 7 and 8
Reenter the fantasy realm of gods, heroes, and an epic quest for true love in Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen (the “Ring” cycle). The most lighthearted of the four epic operas tells of Siegfried’s journey into adulthood with remarkable orchestral scene painting sprinkled with moments of humor. Infused with Wagner’s ingenious short musical themes (leitmotifs) to weave together the tale, this is a must-see event. Sung in German with English surtitles.

Virginia Opera: The Barber of Seville

The Barber of SevilleNovember 11 and 12
Figaro, wily barber and wingman extraordinaire, invites audiences to laugh and cheer in this beloved masterpiece, Gioachino Rossini’s delightful bel canto and operatic comedy, The Barber of Seville. Presented by Virginia Opera, audiences of all ages will recognize the music of Rossini’s tour de force tale of bribery, deception, disguise, and, of course, true love. The music for this production is provided by the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. Sung in Italian with English surtitles.

Virginia Opera: Sanctuary Road

Sanctuary RoadFebruary 3 and 4
Based on the writings of William Still, an African American leader on the Underground Railroad, Virginia Opera is thrilled to introduce the contemporary opera Sanctuary Road by composer Paul Moravec and librettist Mark Campbell. In a pledge to nurture the next generation of artists, Moravec and Campbell transformed these daring stories of courage, perseverance, and sacrifice into an enthralling historical oratorio. Sung in English with English surtitles.

Virginia Opera: Madama Butterfly

Madama ButterflyMarch 16 and 17
Virginia Opera’s season concludes with one of opera’s most beloved works, Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. With a haunting score—heavily influenced by Japanese folk melodies— filled with unforgettable music of unparalleled beauty, this production will stay with you long after you’ve left the theater. This ever-popular opera will feature an all-female, Asian creative team, bringing a new lens to this tragic tale. Sung in Italian with English surtitles.
