Various members of Silkroad Ensemble will engage the community through a variety of events, classes, and discussions, including semester-long participation in a fall 2023 Mason Honors College course, “The Silk Road and the Railroad: An artistic exploration of the Transcontinental Railroad in American history and culture.”</p> <p>Taught by College of Visual and Performing Arts Dean <strong>Rick Davis</strong>, this academic course will explore the many cultures, histories, music, and narratives of the Transcontinental Railroad, providing context to Silkroad Ensemble’s newest initiative to map American music through the various immigrant communities involved in building the late-1800s Transcontinental Railroad. It is particularly exciting when those students represent a wide range of interests. My current Honors College class comprises more than 15 different academic majors and a like number of minors, from Forensic Science to Engineering to Economics to Modern Languages. Everyone brings their own perspective to the subject, while engaging with the artists of Silkroad Ensemble in ways that demonstrate the universality and power of the arts to ask questions and tell stories that resonate across cultures and disciplines.  </p> <p><em><strong>In what ways is this new project from Silkroad Ensemble, American Railroad, relevant to modern audiences?  </strong></em></p> <p>I think it's a brilliant idea to bring the vast metaphor of the Silk Road, that connector of cultures and shaper of economies, closer to home by focusing on the Transcontinental Railroad (and, by extension, railroads more generally) as a transformative element in American history. The cultural connections and clashes that the railroad created (including indigenous and enslaved populations), the role of immigrants in its construction, the very idea that for the first time one could move people and goods quickly across this vast continent—all represent huge shifts in the way our country grew and thought about itself. That, in turn, created songs, stories, paintings, and photographs that still resonate today. The Silkroad Ensemble have studied this very deeply and are creating a variety of original responses. As a symbol of profound change, the railroad has few equals and we are always seeking to understand and live with change, today and every day. </p> <hr /><h4><a href="https://cfa.calendar.gmu.edu/silkroad-ensemble-with-rhiannon-giddens" target="_blank">Get your tickets</a> today and join Silkroad Ensemble on November 5 for its stunning world-premiere performance of <em>American Railroad</em>. </h4> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_content_topics" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-content-topics"> <h2>Topics</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-content-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Topics</div> <div class='field__items'> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/311" hreflang="en">CFA</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/806" hreflang="en">Honors College</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/96" hreflang="en">Rick Davis</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/81" hreflang="en">Campus News</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Wed, 27 Sep 2023 16:31:33 +0000 Zoe Harr 2306 at https://cfa.gmu.edu Get to know Silkroad Ensemble Cellist/Composer, Karen Ouzounian https://cfa.gmu.edu/news/2023-01/get-know-silkroad-ensemble-cellistcomposer-karen-ouzounian <span>Get to know Silkroad Ensemble Cellist/Composer, Karen Ouzounian</span> <span><span lang="" about="/user/376" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">Zoe Harr</span></span> <span>Thu, 01/12/2023 - 12:23</span> <div class="layout layout--gmu layout--twocol-section layout--twocol-section--30-70"> <div class="layout__region region-first"> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:call_to_action" data-inline-block-uuid="a8c3f57e-40a4-4da8-a8dc-a329d54b344f"> <div class="cta"> <a class="cta__link" href="https://cfa.gmu.edu/about/artists-residence"> <h4 class="cta__title">Mason Artist-in-Residence Program <i class="fas fa-arrow-circle-right"></i> </h4> <span class="cta__icon"></span> </a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:body" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasebody"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Body</div> <div class="field__item"><figure role="group" class="align-left"><div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq196/files/styles/small_content_image/public/2022-11/Karen%20Ouzonian%20%281%29.jpg?itok=kcESWABO" width="336" height="350" alt="Cellist/composer Karen Ouzonian joins Silkroad Ensemble at the Center on January 29 at 4 p.m." loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" /></div> </div> <figcaption>Karen Ouzounian joins Silkroad Ensemble at the Center on January 29 at 4 p.m.</figcaption></figure><p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>The GRAMMY Award-winning Silkroad Ensemble debuts their newest program </span></span></span></span><span><span><span><strong><em><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Uplifted Voices</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></em></strong></span></span></span> <span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>at the Center for the Arts on January 29. This is the first piece I’ve written for a Silkroad Ensemble live performance and it is a particularly meaningful one for me. It is based on archival recordings of an Armenian folk song (my family is Armenian) called "Der Zor Chollerende," a song sung in Turkish by the victims of the Armenian Genocide while on the forced marches into the Syrian desert of Der Zor. In 1915 and 1916, hundreds of thousands of Armenians were marched to their deaths in Der Zor by the Ottoman Turkish government. The principal recording I was inspired by was made by Armenians in 1939 in Fresno, California, but I subsequently found other recordings of the song made over the last 100 years from across the world, mapping out the spread of the Armenian diaspora. It’s a haunting and devastating song, but the fact that these recordings exist, and that we as musicians can share this music for you live, carries with it a hopeful message.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <hr /><p><em><span><span><span><span><span><strong><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>You've mentioned that you find great importance in supporting the next generation of artists which is a goal of Mason's Artist-in-Residence program, which Silkroad Ensemble is a part of in a three-year residency. There are full ensemble pieces as well as pieces for small groups and duos. We all take turns playing in lead and accompanying roles. Many of us have also written pieces for the program and we are each stretching ourselves and trying new things in one way or another. I hope that this program gives every student the inspiration and encouragement to explore and experiment with ways to express themselves artistically, in whatever medium they are drawn to. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <hr /><p><em><span><span><span><span><span><strong><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Tell us about your history with the cello. But growing up it was always a struggle to balance cello practice with school and everything else, so it wasn’t until I started studying at Juilliard that I had the chance to focus my life around the cello. I’m so grateful to have studied with my teacher there, Timothy Eddy—he’s a profound musician and thinker, a person with the utmost integrity, and he really opened the door to music, and essentially to life, to me. Playing the cello and studying music have given my life meaning and even the sense that life can feel limitless. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <hr /><p><em><span><span><span><span><span><strong><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>You have many musical projects under your belt, including the GRAMMY-nominated Aizuri Quartet and an experimental theater work with director Joanna Settle. I am constantly looking for artists I not only see eye-to-eye with, but artists that I can learn from, who push me out of my comfort zones and help me grow. I also love projects that combine a sense of history and storytelling with a modern aesthetic and a contemporary sense of the world.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <hr /><p><em><span><span><span><span><span><strong><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Collaboration is something you've noted to be important to you. I am at a stage in my career where I am thinking a lot both about creating work that is true to my identity as an artist, but also about continuing to learn new things. I am particularly interested in learning from and working with performers from the world of my ancestors: Armenia, Turkey, and the Arab world, artists ranging from oud players to jazz musicians like Tigran Hamasyan. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p>Purchase your tickets now for <strong>Silkroad Ensemble<em> </em></strong>at the <a href="https://cfa.calendar.gmu.edu/" target="_blank"><strong>Center for the Arts</strong></a><strong> </strong>(1/29), and in the meantime, enjoy a video of Karen Ouzounianin action with the Greater Bridgeport Symphony.</p> <div class="align-center" style="min-width: 50%;"> <div class="field field--name-field-media-video-embed-field field--type-video-embed-field field--label-hidden field__item"><div class="video-embed-field-provider-youtube video-embed-field-responsive-video"><iframe width="854" height="480" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/djH-WJUcz40?autoplay=0&amp;start=0&amp;rel=0"></iframe> </div> </div> </div> <p> </p> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_content_topics" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-content-topics"> <h2>Topics</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-content-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Topics</div> <div class='field__items'> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/311" hreflang="en">CFA</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/581" hreflang="en">Artist in Residence</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/81" hreflang="en">Campus News</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Thu, 12 Jan 2023 17:23:28 +0000 Zoe Harr 2046 at https://cfa.gmu.edu Introducing a New Look for Mason Arts at Home! https://cfa.gmu.edu/news/2022-11/introducing-new-look-mason-arts-home <span>Introducing a New Look for Mason Arts at Home!</span> <span><span lang="" about="/user/331" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">Kirstin Franko</span></span> <span>Wed, 11/09/2022 - 14:40</span> <div class="layout layout--gmu layout--twocol-section layout--twocol-section--30-70"> <div class="layout__region region-first"> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_associated_people" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-associated-people"> <h2>In This Story</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-associated-people field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">People Mentioned in This Story</div> <div class='field__items'> <div class="field__item"><a href="/profiles/agodwin3" hreflang="und">Adrienne Bryant Godwin</a></div> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:call_to_action" data-inline-block-uuid="ef3f7dfe-518d-4aef-997f-d02cf29adc7d"> <div class="cta"> <a class="cta__link" href="https://masonartsathome.gmu.edu/browse"> <h4 class="cta__title">Create Free Mason Arts at Home Account <i class="fas fa-arrow-circle-right"></i> </h4> <span class="cta__icon"></span> </a> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="inline_block:call_to_action" data-inline-block-uuid="a67f7dee-ec32-4fe9-bfad-5151a41a4872"> <div class="cta"> <a class="cta__link" href="https://cfa.gmu.edu/events/mason-arts-home"> <h4 class="cta__title">More Information and FAQs <i class="fas fa-arrow-circle-right"></i> </h4> <span class="cta__icon"></span> </a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout__region region-second"> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:body" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasebody"> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Body</div> <div class="field__item"><p><span><span><a href="https://masonartsathome.gmu.edu/browse"><em>Mason Arts at Home</em> </a>is an online platform and “digital venue” featuring curated arts experiences, including livestreamed concerts, releases of previously recorded content, behind-the-scenes talks with artists, and more. The event gave students and faculty from each discipline an opportunity to pull back the curtain and present behind-the-scenes showcases, film screenings, performances, and interactive experiences. Stations of exquisite cuisine and beverages were available to guests while attending exhibits across ten open studios and rehearsal halls on Mason’s Fairfax Campus. </p> <p>In a truly special start to the evening, students from the School of Theater were able to join the event’s headliner, Kristin Chenoweth, for her soundcheck in the Concert Hall of the Center for the Arts, prior to their own performances in the evening’s showcases. The Tony and Emmy Award winner welcomed them with open arms, remarking “These are my people! Just down the hall, the emerging professionals of Mason’s School of Dance performed to packed houses, and graciously responded to questions from the audience after each performance. We will always be grateful for the opportunities and inspiration Jazz4Justice™ provided us.”</span></span></span></p> <figure role="group" class="align-left"><div> <div class="field field--name-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img src="/sites/g/files/yyqcgq196/files/styles/medium/public/2021-11/Jazz4justice-Jim-Carroll-225x300.jpg?itok=XFZmJeeS" width="225" height="300" alt="Jim Carroll with Jazz 4 Justice" loading="lazy" typeof="foaf:Image" /></div> </div> <figcaption>Professor of Jazz Studies and Mason Jazz Ensemble Director Jim Carroll with the 2021 Jack Wood Award for Town-Gown Relations.</figcaption></figure><p><span><span><span>Jazz4Justice™ began in 2000 when Fairfax attorney Edward L. Weiner attended a jazz recital by Mason’s School of Music. Impressed by the music, and reflecting on his work as a past President of the Fairfax Law Foundation (FLF), Weiner saw an opportunity for a new partnership—one in which universities would provide the musical talent and the local legal community would provide the audience and sponsors. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Today, this breakthrough idea has grown into a symphonic, celebratory event with over $500,000 raised for music scholarships, educational aid, and charitable legal services for Virginians in need of civic resources. Due to its astounding impact, Jazz4Justice™ has received awards from the American Bar Association and the Virginia State Bar, and has most recently received the <a href="https://relations.gmu.edu/community-relations/programs-and-services/jack-wood-award-for-town-gown-relations/2021-jack-wood-award-recipients/">2021 Jack Wood Award for Town-Gown Relations</a>, a coveted award recognizing leadership in fostering beneficial relationships between George Mason University and the community during the past year. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>“This year’s Jazz4Justice is especially important as so many people in our community are hurting,” Carroll added. “That we can use Jazz, a true metaphor for democracy and teach our students to be “Artists as Citizens”' is truly a blessing.”</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Tickets to the concert at the Center for the Arts are available at the Ticket Office (open Tuesday–Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.), by calling at 703-993-2787, or at <a href="https://cfa.gmu.edu">cfa.gmu.edu</a>.</span></span></span></p> </div> </div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:news_release:field_content_topics" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodenews-releasefield-content-topics"> <h2>Topics</h2> <div class="field field--name-field-content-topics field--type-entity-reference field--label-visually_hidden"> <div class="field__label visually-hidden">Topics</div> <div class='field__items'> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/226" hreflang="en">College of Visual and Performing Arts</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/196" hreflang="en">Center for the Arts</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/81" hreflang="en">Campus News</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/371" hreflang="en">Jack Wood Award for Town Gown Relations</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/251" hreflang="en">Dewberry School of Music</a></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> Wed, 03 Nov 2021 20:32:12 +0000 Kirstin Franko 1581 at https://cfa.gmu.edu
