On Sunday Dec. 6, 2015 “A Christmas Gathering: Féile Na Nollag”

brings a Celtic Christmas to the Center for the Arts

FAIRFAX, Va., Nov. 17, 2015 – High-spirited Celtic holiday songs and stories come to the George Mason University’s Center for the Arts as the traditional Irish band Danú presents “A Christmas Gathering: Féile Na Nollag.” Music is an essential part of any Celtic Christmas celebration and this performance brings the devotion, tradition and passion of Irish music in a unique holiday celebration. Danú will be at the Center for the Arts on Sunday, Dec. 6, 2015 at 4 p.m.

Hailing from Ireland’s historic County Waterford, Danú has built a massive fan base worldwide due to its ebullient performances and mastery of traditional Celtic instruments. Loyal fans around the world enjoy the virtuosity of the ensemble performing on traditional Celtic instruments such as fiddle, tin whistle, flute, button accordion, percussion and bouzouki. The amazing instrumentalists combine efforts with captivating vocalists and top-notch Celtic dancers. The recipient of numerous BBC and Irish Music Magazine awards, Danú has performed for audiences throughout Europe, the Middle East and North America at venues such as the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Symphony Space in New York City and major concert engagements in the United Kingdom, India and Israel. The band has released eight recordings and its live performances are often broadcast on NPR, the CBC and the BBC. The band’s live DVD, “One Night Stand,” was filmed at Vicar St. Dublin in Ireland.

Drawing from the strong Christmas traditions of Ireland, A Christmas Gathering: Féile Na Nollag” embodies the spirit of family, friends and faith. Local community choirs singing traditional songs for Christmas and the Irish holiday of Wrens Day, held on Dec. 26, are a common site throughout Ireland each December. Music and dance gatherings, in communities throughout Ireland have combined for generations to offer a great variety of songs, music and stories for the holidays. Danú’s performance offers a taste of these extraordinary events, which have been held across Ireland for hundreds of years.

A pre-performance discussion, free to ticketholders, will be held 45 minutes prior to each performance on Grand Tier III at the Center for the Arts. The Friends of the Center for the Arts sponsor the pre-performance discussions.

Great Performances at Mason is a program of George Mason University's Center for the Arts, the professional presentation and production arm of the College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA).
