BALLET FOLKLÓRICO DE ANTIOQUIA, COLOMBIA

FAIRFAX, Va., Jan. 26, 2012 – For more than two decades, Ballet Folklórico de Antioquia, Colombia has endeavored to promote, celebrate and strengthen the multicultural richness of Colombian culture through dance and music. This ensemble’s spectacular performances feature authentic music and ritualistic dance highlighted with brilliantly colored and scintillating costumes. Ballet Folklórico de Antioquia, Colombia appears at George Mason University’s Center for the Arts Concert Hall on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at 8 p.m. HSBC Bank is the 2011-12 Global View Series Sponsor at George Mason University’s Center for the Arts. This performance is Family Friendly: tickets are half price for youth through grade 12 when accompanied by an adult. A pre-performance discussion, free to ticket holders, begins 45 minutes prior to the performance on the Center’s Grand Tier III. Pre-performance discussions are sponsored by the Friends of the Center for the Arts.

Founded more than 20 years ago by Albeiro Roldán Penagos in the Colombian city of Medellín, Ballet Folklórico de Antioquia, Colombia debuted in 1991 at the Medellín Metropolitan Theatre. In the years following its debut, Penagos decided to introduce his ensemble to the rest of the world. The ensemble has since toured across the globe, performing to audiences in Spain, Belgium, Holland, Chile, Peru and the United States, among others. Ballet Folklórico de Antioquia, Colombia has received numerous accolades for its professionalism, high technical level and artistic quality. In 1998, the ensemble earned the “Cabe Citar” Gold Medal at the Stylized Folk Olympics in Dijon, France. In 2003, it was awarded the “Ugo Re Capriata” special recognition award at the International Folk Dance Festival in Agrigento, Italy. In 2005 and 2009, the ensemble received a special recognition for its participation in the International Festival of the Performing Arts in Tamaulipas, Mexico. The ensemble was also granted the “Perfección” special recognition honor at the 25th Annual International Festival in Quebec in 2006. More locally, it was recognized at the Folkmoot International Festival in North Carolina. In 2008, it was a special guest at the Olympic games in Beijing, being the first Colombian group to ever participant in such an event. The ensemble was also invited to participate in the opening and closing ceremonies at the South American Games in Medellín in 2010.
