GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY’S CENTER FOR THE ARTS PRESENTS
AWARD WINNING MEMBERS OF THE SHANGHAI ACROBATIC TROUPE
CHI
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 7:00 p.m.

Fairfax, Virginia, October 5, 2005—Literally translated it means ‘energy’ or ‘breath,’ and once the rhythm and spirit of CHI is unleashed, the logic behind this name is evident. Making their Center for the Arts debut on Sunday, November 13 at 7:00 p.m., the skillful acrobats of CHI bring a masterful melding of tradition and high-tech theatricality to their performance. A pre-performance discussion begins 45-minutes prior to the curtain on the hall’s Grand Tier. Family friendly! All children, 12 and under, are half price.

Contortionists, teeter boards flipping acrobats, astonishing balance work, trapeze artistry, hoop somersaults, dancing midair, over-the-top costumes, and light and sound wizardry combine to breathe new life into ancient folk tales, symbolism and Taoist tradition when CHI takes the stage.
A celebration that reveals the true harmony between man and nature, from the civilization which created what is today’s modern acrobatics, CHI’s performances have been called, “…an exhilarating marriage of athletic and acrobatic agility…” (The Honolulu Advertiser), and “…strikingly unusual…” (Schenectady Daily Gazette). CHI attempts to illustrate the balance between yin and yang with movement that is mystical, poised, and peaceful, as well as powerful, unrestrained and passionate.

GREAT PERFORMANCES AT MASON is a program of George Mason University’s Center for the Arts, the professional presenting arm of the College of Visual and Performing Arts. The College of Visual and Performing Arts exists to create an academic environment in which the arts may be considered both as individual disciplines and as interdisciplinary forms that strengthen each other. Believing that an education in the arts is deepened by regular contact with the work of distinguished visiting artists, the College draws on a variety of professional presenting and producing units where artists from across the country and around the world regularly perform, give master classes, work with students during extended residencies, and interact with the community in a variety of other ways. These programs at the Center for the Arts Concert Hall, TheaterSpace, Galleries, Harris Theater, and other venues, provide a diverse selection of challenging and entertaining cultural experiences for the University community, as well as Northern Virginia and the greater Washington, D.C. area. The College houses four academic departments: Art and Visual Technology, Dance, Music and Theater.
