Virginia Opera: H.M.S. Pinafore

  • December 5, 2014 at 8:00 pm

Concert Hall

Set sail on the high seas as Virginia Opera performs Gilbert & Sullivan's beloved maritime masterpiece. All aboard the grand British naval ship, H.M.S. Pinafore, where the Captain plans to wed his dear daughter to the First Lord of the Admiralty, despite her forbidden love for a sailor of humble means. Hilarity ensues and secrets are revealed when the young couple ignores social convention and plans to elope. Filled with toe-tapping tunes, saucy satire, and nutty nautical humor, it is easy to see why this timeless comic operetta was Gilbert & Sullivan's first international sensation, and remains one of the opera world’s most popular works. Sung in English with English supertitles.

Come early to view Pinafore Craze in America 1878-1879, an exhibition featuring original photographs, programs, librettos, sheet music, playbills, souvenirs, advertising ephemera, and other artifacts from the media blitz phenomenon that surrounded H.M.S. Pinafore’s earliest productions. The artifacts are from George Mason University benefactors David and Annabelle Stone, who are giving their collection of treasured Gilbert and Sullivan memorabilia to the Mason Libraries’ Special Collections. The exhibition will be on display in the Concert Hall lobby from December 5-7. Read more about the Gilbert and Sullivan collection coming to George Mason University: http://newsdesk.gmu.edu/2014/10/gilbert-sullivan-collection-make-home-mason/

Holiday Celebration with The 5 Browns

  • December 12, 2014 at 8:00 pm

Concert Hall Family-Friendly Event

For a truly impressive holiday experience, come witness this youthful quintet of siblings performing beloved Christmas music on five grand pianos. In their Center debut, these virtuosic pianists present a merry evening of music-making featuring everything from Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker Suite to selections from Vince Guaraldi's A Charlie Brown Christmas. Praised by Entertainment Weekly for their "scorching piano," these five first made headlines when they were accepted at Julliard simultaneously, and have since exploded onto the classical music scene. The Billboard chart-topping artists have appeared on The Tonight Show, Today, Oprah, and even in their own PBS special, but nothing can match the experience of enjoying these talents live onstage thundering away on five Steinways. "One family, five pianos, and 50 fingers add up to the biggest classical music sensation in years." (New York Post)
