André Previn’s modern masterpiece blends the sultry and fiery drama of Tennessee Williams’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play with a brilliant score, creating a musical experience that will enchant both opera devotees and those less familiar with opera. Meet Blanche DuBois, a fading and fragile Southern belle who attempts to leave her shadowy past behind when she moves into her sister’s home in the steamy underbelly of urban New Orleans. But violent clashes and sexual tension with her brutish and bitter brother-in-law, Stanley Kowalski, lead to the story’s shocking climax, which drives Blanche even further into her own delusions and away from reality. Previn’s expressive and riveting score enhance the raw emotion and heartbreaking tragedy of this gripping work. Sung in English with English supertitles.

With special guest Michael Doucet, fiddle
These accomplished Grammy Award-winning artists explore the myriad faces of Cajun music, a quintessentially American genre. Inspired by Virgil Thomson’s 1949 Pulitzer Prize-winning film score for Louisiana Story, this collaboration with Michael Doucet reflects a long time connection among these extraordinary instrumentalists. Turtle Island Quartet, the world’s preeminent cross-genre string quartet, has spent more than 25 years expanding the definition of classical music by infusing the string quartet esthetic with jazz, folk, rock, and ethnic music. Master fiddler Michael Doucet, leader of the famed band BeauSoliel, has put his encyclopedic mastery of Cajun music to work, revealing an array of diverse stylistic influences from around the globe. The Washington Post extols his mastery of the fiddle as “brash and blazing.” Together, these artists present a thrilling evening of music not to be missed!

- March 30, 2013 at 2:00 pm
Harris Theater
by Michael Patrick Smith
Directed by guest artist Stevie Zimmerman
Fresh from Theater of the First Amendment’s First Light play development program, we proudly offer the world premiere of stellar new play written by a student of Mason’s Playwriting Program. In a small Italian town, the annual festival of the Madonna lies in the hands of the opera-loving mayor. As the secret lives, hidden loves and faithful passions of the townsfolk intersect, the mayor’s belief in the power of song collides with the demands of the people to bring a little wealth back to the town. What everyone needs is a miracle - is there any such thing anymore?
