Aquila Theatre: Cyrano de Bergerac

  • January 18, 2013 at 8:00 pm

Concert Hall

One of the most vibrant characters in literature comes to life in Aquila Theatre’s stunning production of Edmond Rostand’s classic tale of unrequited love. A man of many talents and with a notoriously large nose, Cyrano longs for the beautiful Roxane who he believes could never have feelings for him. Suffering in silence, he instead expresses his love by helping a handsome but simple-minded suitor win her heart, thus beginning a decades-long love triangle. Based on an historical figure, this famous French play still delights today and has attracted some of the world’s most renowned actors for the lead. “Beautifully spoken, dramatically revealing, and crystalline in effect,” raves the New Yorker about this inventive British-American touring troupe, whose mission is to present the classics in a style that delights modern audiences.

Savion Glover: SoLe Sanctuary

  • January 20, 2013 at 7:00 pm

Concert Hall

Read what Savion has to say about this performance.

In this distinctive new production, celebrated choreographer and tap dancer Savion Glover honors his art form with a Hoofer’s meditation on the art of tap. This production honors dance legends like Sammy Davis Jr., Jimmy Slyde, and his teacher and mentor, Gregory Hines. The New York Times describes this reverent performance as “barebones and pure, full of the kind of rhythmic innovation that trips down one path, splinters off in different directions, and then sweeps back home.” For the past 25 years, this nonpareil of the popular dance world has dedicated his career to restoring the African roots to the art of tap. With a string of Broadway hits such as the Tony Award-winning Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk and Jelly’s Last Jam to his appearances in Spike Lee’s Bamboozled and the Academy Award-winning animated film, Happy Feet, Savion Glover has become a contemporary legend in the dance community. The New York Times has dubbed him “a peerless dynamo of rhythmic tap dance” because of his thundering footwork and unmatched technique.

Black Watch has participated in major world conflicts for nearly three centuries and its celebrated pipes and drums have escorted troops into many famous battles, including Ticonderoga, Waterloo, and even the Second Gulf War. Originally formed in 1642 by King Charles, The Band of the Scots Guards has entertained the British troops serving in battles, including both of the World Wars. Beyond touring the globe, this respected 40-member orchestra performs at the daily Guard Mounting at Buckingham Palace and at various state functions throughout Britain. With the distinctive sounds of bagpipes and brass, the high-spirited Scottish sword dances and regimental marching -and of course the stately uniforms - this spectacle is a feast for the eyes and ears whose breathtaking grandeur is sure to captivate the entire family!
