Virginia Opera: Salome

  • February 14, 2015 at 8:00 pm

Concert Hall

Richard Strauss's chilling one-act opera, an adaptation of Oscar Wilde's notorious play about the Bible's wicked femme fatale, both shocked and thrilled audiences more than a century ago with its extravagant debauchery and rich, evocative score. Salome, the beautiful yet troubled stepdaughter of Herod, has a perverse obsession over the imprisoned John the Baptist, who spurns her seductions. Meanwhile, her lecherous stepfather is willing to offer her whatever her heart desires if only she will perform a dance, until he learns of the extremity of her demands. With its broad vocal range and the sensual "Dance of the Seven Veils," the title role is among one of the most demanding in all of opera. Virginia Opera brings this spectacular work to our stage for the first time. Sung in German with English supertitles.
